THE HISTORY OF BILAL

“One of the basic teachings of Islam is the unity of mankind and equality of people. From the very outset, the Islamic community was built to include everybody; men and women of different tribes, races, and social groups. In the eyes of the Muslims, they were all brothers with no differences between them. Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) was the first to declare equality among human beings in the annals of world history 1,400 years ago.

In the presence of over 120,000 companions during Haj, he declared: “O people! Your Lord is one Lord, and you all share the same father (Adam). Indeed, there is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab or of a non-Arab over an Arab; or of a white over a black; nor a black over a white, except by taqwa (righteousness).” It is no wonder then, that one of the best known heroes in Arabic history, used to describe himself as “the Abyssinian, who was a slave” without any sense of embarrassment. He knew that to his brothers, this was of no significance.

The hero we are talking about is “Bilal ibn Rabah”, the first slave in Arabic history to convert to Islam, and one of the most trusted and loyal Sahabah (companions) of the  prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

“Bilal ibn Rabah” was born in Mecca, in the year 580 AD. His father, “Rabah”, was an Arab slave from the clan of “Banu Jumah” while his mother, “Hamama”, was a former princess of Abysinna (modern day Ethiopia) who was captured after the ‘Year of the Elephant’ (the attempt to destroy the Ka’aba) and was cast into slavery.

Being born into slavery, Bilal had no other option but to work for his master, Umayya ibn Khalaf, the leader of Quraish (the polytheistic tribe). He used to travel to far lands for ‘Umayya’s trading caravan, braving the bitter cold of winter and the extreme heat of summer, overworked and mistreated.

Bilal soon became recognized as a worthy slave and was entrusted with the keys to the Idols of Arabia. However, the racism and sociopolitical status of Arabia prevented Bilal from achieving a lofty position in society.

When Mohammed (PBUH) announced his prophet-hood and started to preach the message of Islam, Bilal renounced idol worship, becoming one of the earliest converts to the faith, which was not an easy thing to do. In that time, even honorable members of Mecca were subjected to harassment as soon as they converted to Islam. To Bilal, it was more difficult though because he had to defy Umayya, his master, who also happens to be a major antagonist of Islam.

When Umayya found out, he tortured Bilal. According to the biographer Ibn Ishaq, Bilal suffered terribly for his immediate acceptance of Mohammed’s (PBUH) message.  It is said that he was beaten mercilessly, dragged around the streets and hills of Mecca by his neck, and subjected to long periods of punishment without food or water.  It has been reported that Umayya would bring him out during the hottest time of the day and throw him on his back in the open valley and have a great boulder put on his chest; then he would say to him, ‘You will stay here till you die or deny Mohammed”.  Bilal would not renounce Islam, and amidst his suffering he uttered only one word – Ahad, Ahad! (meaning One, only one God)

It has been mentioned that news of the slave who cried out ‘God is One!’ even in the midst of torture, soon reached Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and his companions.  Abu Bakr, Prophet Mohammed’s (PBUH) closest friend and a wealthy trader of equal status to Umayya, was sent to investigate. He came upon the open field where Bilal was being tortured for amusement. Abu Bakr did not lose his temper, for that was not his way, but he said to Umayya, “Have you no fear of God that you treat this poor man like this?”  He replied saying: “You are the one who corrupted him, so you save him from his plight!” Abu Bakr replied: “Then sell him to me, name your price.” Umayya, was a businessman and could not give up making a profit, so he sold Bilal for a good price. To humiliate Bilal, he added: “I would have sold him to you even if you had offered me only an ounce of gold.”  Abu Bakr answered: “I would have bought him even if you had asked for one hundred ounces.”

For the next decade Bilal accompanied Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) on his military expeditions, spreading the knowledge of Islam and being given an important position as a commander of forces, finally putting his intelligence and skill to full use.

He also became renowned for his beautiful voice as he prayed aloud, and had the honor of becoming the first muezzin—one who calls Muslims to prayer from atop a mosque.

Bilal became one of the most trusted and loyal companions of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Bilal even migrated with the prophet (PBUH) to Madinah and participated in major battles including Badr, Ohud, and Khandaq. In the battle of Badr, he killed the staunch enemy of Islam, his former tyrant master, Umayya.

Over the years, he grew close to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and when he passed away, it was said that Bilal couldn’t stay in Madinah any longer. He moved to Syria where he spent his last days where he died in the year 640, at the age of 57.” [2]
